Tourist drivers have been getting a fair bit of grief in the media lately. So how would New Zealanders do if asked to sit a driving test? Reporters Martin Van Beynen and Brittany Mann have years of driving experience between them, and were put through their paces to see if they have the skills to pass a mock driving test. They both failed, Van Beynen citing the following errors:

  • Not slowing down for railway lines and not looking to see if a train was coming.
  • Not using a flush median to make a right hand turn.
  • No head check when making a left turn across a cycle lane (I knew there were no cyclists).
  • Not indicating a left hand turn exiting a roundabout.
  • Increased speed approaching a speed zone.
  • Not increasing speed in 80kmh zone.
  • Exceeding speed limit in school zone.
  • Two mergers without indicating or head check.
  • Not enough use of mirrors.

Be honest, which of the above are you occasionally guilty of? We at Fleetcoach reckon we could all improve some aspect of our driving, so let's not get too complacent about it! It's easy to utter the words 'take his keys', but let's make sure we're constantly reviewing our own skill level while we're throwing those stones.
