We hear so much about driverless cars, but why aren't they already on the market? What's holding them back? This excellent article sums up the main issues facing the manufacturers. It covers ethical dilemmas (the car is programmed to avoid collisions, but what if a child runs out in front of the car? Does that justify a swerve, potentially endangering other lives instead? Who decides this?), as well as faults in the current technology, standardisation problems (like for vehicle-to-vehicle communications), and security risks.
Food for thought... seems like it'll be a while before we see these available for mainstream use!
