Road Safety Week NZ is happening! Yes, now!
As with many other events in 2020, Brake (the road safety charity) had to postpone its annual Road Safety Week initiative. So, instead of doing the great work raising awareness of the carnage on New Zealand roads in May, this year Road Safety Week is 9-15 November.
Each year Brake spotlights a different theme, for 2020 it is Step Up for Safe Streets. One focus is on design-led solutions that help keep us safe every day. This includes the layout of our road transport network, safety technology in vehicles, and speed limits that are suitable for specific roads.
Safe Streets also make sure that choosing to walk or cycle doesn’t put us at increased risk and that the air we breathe on our journeys is clean. We all know change doesn’t happen overnight and often the benefits are not seen immediately, but we hope this new roundabout heading into Cambridge is just the first of many multi road user solutions to come!
The shared responsibility for improving road safety is a key principle for all our road users to understand. Despite what many New Zealand drivers think, they do not “own” the road when they are out driving, and we can all Step Up and play a part in the celebration of safe system solutions!
